NeonQi paints cool, dreamlike atmospheres out of common objects and experiences that imagine expansive depths. Intimate views that focus on her subjects similarly to remembering dreamsβ blurry in between moments, elusiveness that continues to weigh heavily with you even after it has long passed. Her paintings contain a longing-ness to seek connection in the disconnected and ever shifting landscape of the modern world.
NeonQi navigates the influences of technology and modernity while imagining a vibrant undercurrent that breathes into her surroundings. She favors a curious path to push through digital anxieties that wash the world of color. Amongst pessimism, she feels responsible to highlight the human ability to create and imagine no matter the circumstances.
Her artwork stays grounded through her cultural heritage, where concepts and mediums from Chinese culture as well as her layered relationship with it as an international adoptee provides roots in her explorations of memory, connection, and modernity.
Along with strong influences from Impressionistic painting and candid photography that capture truly mundane moments whose importance is understood by the decision to capture it. A meaning that doesnβt suit logical perspectives and forces one to uncover their own connections.

NEONQI comes from a play on my middle name Nianqi that I created. The latterβs meaning βto look at a beautiful piece of jade.β The word neon conjures the alluring glow of neon signs and their artificial beauty. Qi generally refers to the Chinese concept of the energy that can be found in everything, both living and nonliving. These concepts and the referentiality to myself and my identity has become a stamp in all of my work.
